Two studies on too many meds

Meta-analysis of impact of different types and doses of statins on new-onset diabetes mellitus.

This is a bit worrisome.  Millions of us are encouraged to take statins like Lipitor for elevated cholesterol.  This study suggests that taking statins may increase the risk of getting diabetes.  You can see more detail and the full abstract of the article at the link below.

Cognitive behavioral treatment of insomnia.

For our patients, is there a tendency to prescibe too many medications for sleep?  At some point, everyone has trouble sleeping.  The study referenced below supports the idea of simple interventions to help with sleep.  Listed here, they would appear to some as common sense but may be difficult for patients to follow.  Perhaps there needs to be support on the part of health care providers to remind patients that sleep can be managed effectively in ways that cognitive behavioral therapists approach sleep.  Some basic tenets of managing insomnia are listed here.

Dont sleep with a TV!  This is referred to as stimulus control therapy.  The bed should be used only for sleep.

Sleep restriction so that you are not in bed while awake and increases sleepiness when you are in bed.

Sleep hygiene such as avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol close to bed time.

Relaxation training such as meditation.
