A Focus on Nurses' Health

The Nurses' Health Studies represent some of the largest prospective studies ever done and the studies are ongoing.  Here are 2 important articles relevant to your health.

This study clearly shows that sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise and obesity are critical determinants of your heart health.  This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among nurses. The analysis of 22 articles involving 117,922 nurses highlighted that sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, family history of CVD, being overweight, and alcohol consumption were prevalent risk factors. Sedentary lifestyle was identified as the most common risk factor among nurses. Nurses working in (night) shifts showed higher prevalence of all risk factors compared to those working day shifts. The findings underscore the importance of addressing CVD risk factors among nursing staff, especially those working in shifts, to implement interventions aimed at reducing these risks and improving overall cardiovascular health in this population. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38512844/

One day you will be old, but do you also want to be frail?

Women who were less active, smoked, did not have a healthy diet and and were obese had a 6 times higher risk of developing frailty.  The study highlights the strong link between a healthy lifestyle, as captured by the Healthy Heart Score, and a reduced risk of frailty in older women. This suggests that modifying lifestyle factors can potentially play a crucial role in preventing frailty in this population. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35136897/
